For the aging population, arthritis is a very common disease condition that warrants serious medical attention. There are actually more than a hundred types of arthritis. However, there are three most common types. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint inflammation affecting people in their late 40s to 50s. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that strikes patients aged 25 to 35 years old. This is the early onset type wherein the body’s own antibodies are attacking the joint, bone and cartilage cells leading to loss of cushion and painful grating of bones. The third type is gout. This is a problem in purine metabolism. Purine, a by-product of protein breakdown dislodges or piles in joints or in other body parts leading to joint stiffness, tophi and kidney stones formation. Countering the symptoms is varied. However, triggering the link between water and arthritis can do the trick.
In arthritis, the cushion that prevents the two adjoined bones from gritting gets broken. This can be a product of wear and tear from old age, an antibody attack or deposits of uric acid. Whatever the cause may be, water can definitely act as a lubricant. Somehow, the pain and stiffness can be relieved. Aside from this, toxin deposits such as in gout can be flushed away through the kidneys. Of course, without sufficient fluid, the harmful deposits not just in joints, but also in fingers, toes or ears (tophi) can be eliminated at once. Forming kidney stones can also be dissolved and released out of the body through the urine. As such, by the simple act of drinking potable water, joints can glide freely and smoothly without sacrificing other parts of the body. If water is constantly made available, pain control will not be a problem. Aside from intake, a cold compress can relax tensed joints. Moreover, cold water can also give an analgesic and anesthetic effect.
In terms of prevention, water and arthritis are highly connected. If one has a high protein diet, then flushing out of nitrogen or uric acid is fast. This can prevent accumulation of harmful deposits that can lead to gout. Alcohol intake is another predisposing factor to arthritis development. If water intake is high, alcohol accumulation is unlikely. With sufficient water consumption, dehydration is also prevented giving the body a better control of its metabolic functions.
By simply knowing the water and arthritis connection, one can effectively prevent, manage or control the pain, stiffness and inflammation of arthritis. As such, knowledge can increase awareness and awareness can bring positive change.
